Daily Gratitude: Life On Mars

Through time and space, I arrive anxious and uncertain. I am in a dark place, isolated by my own doing. I controlled the launch. I selected the destination. Fear of asphyxiation lies right outside the comfort of my shuttle.

What if I’m not ready?

What if I’m not good enough?

Often times, this is what self questioning and depreciation can feel like. We retreat to the darkest places of our mind, only to be met by irrational fears and a contorted view of our reality. We may not travel to Mars but these thoughts certainly can make us feel hundreds of millions of miles from anyone who can help or understand. The same two questions presented prior to any kind of major change or transition in our lives. These questions, have an answer.

You are ready.

You are good enough.

You were born for this.

I step out on to the surface of the foreign planet. The sun, warming my suit and finally reaching this side of Mars. I grow more confident with each motion forward. I forge a new path in a strange place leaving behind the comfort of my ship.


Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end. 

Will the day’s journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend. 

But is there for the night a resting-place? A roof for when the slow dark hours begin. 

May not the darkness hide it from my face? You cannot miss that inn. 

Shall I meet other wayfarers at night? Those who have gone before. 

Then must I knock, or call when just in sight? They will not keep you standing at that door. 

Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak? Of labour you shall find the sum. 

Will there be beds for me and all who seek? Yea, beds for all who come.

As the old adage goes, we don’t know unless we try. Words of change fill and circle my mind like wind trapped in a bottle. The journey will not be easy. The answers we seek may not always be clear. But we must begin if we wish to find our way. Indecision and complacency leave us stranded in the recess of our minds, on the cold side of distant planets.

Begin today, and do it with gratitude for what got you here.

  3. Creative outlets and opportunities
  4. Coaches, teachers, mentors, and role models
  5. Late night ice cream
  6. A couple deep breaths when I need them
  7. Time to reflect and decide
  8. Inspiration, in all its forms
  9. My family and the support they provide
  10. The here and now, this present moment

Today was great! My class talked about gratitude without any prompting from me, I promise. All of the values we discussed are important and worthy of admiration. It all contributes to building positive and encouraging environments for the people around us.

These are students that want to make a difference. People who care about making positive changes in their environment. I’m so grateful to share these discussions and learn about their “why”.

Happy Birthday, Ned! (#264)


The old man turns 11. One year again today, I adopted Eddard Stark Ames but I like to call him Ned for short. He’s not the friendliest but he sure knows how to cuddle. He’s an old man set in his ways but has brought love and affection to my family and me. When I adopted Ned, I wasn’t sure how my parents would react. They weren’t thrilled about the idea but I think they realize how special Ned is. He’s always around to listen and can appreciate a good piece of ham. Looking forward to spending many more birthdays with my cat Ned.

When Life Gets Crazy (#254)

Life often feels like a balancing act between juggling responsibilities and taking care of yourself or your family. When the stress sets in, remind yourself that you still need to take care of you.

Personally, I get frustrated hearing people tell me that “they’ll be fine” or “it’s no big deal” when they’re not taking care of themselves. Finding time for you is important. It’s not always easy but it’s important. Be grateful when you can.

Time Flies (#232)

I’m really trying my best to be present. To savor and cherish every second that passes me by in a day. I get to celebrate one of my best friends, Melissa, with her family and I’m grateful. The problem is as I write this post, is that today is already over.

This goes two ways though. I feel like I’m being mindful without the constant mental reminders. I engage in conversation, I use my senses to appreciate my surroundings, I listen to others, and it all falls into place from there. I can’t believe there’s already been 11 days of August because I feel like I just got home.

Life is both long and short, we gotta make the most of it anyway we know how.

I’m grateful for gratitude. It may seem like an intuitive statement but it’s true. Gratitude is powerful and sharing it allows us to be present. Change is always happening and gratitude grounds us in the here and now.
